The Gambia: A brief Introduction

As Africa’s smallest country, The Gambia is nicknamed “the smiling coast of West Africa” because of its happy nature and the welcoming characteristics of The Gambian people. The Gambia found its independence in 1965 and is part of the Commonwealth Nations. English is the official language.
The Gambia is a democratic country led by the President and the Houses of Parliament.
A few years after The Gambia found independence, education became a priority for improving the development of society and commercial / industrial opportunities and growth. This work is still ongoing and The Gambia is only now just beginning to provide its population with higher education in its newly founded universities, colleges and public sector institutions.
This modernisation of The Gambia requires that the Government, its departments and educational institutions seek professional and skilled personnel to continue the development of the Gambian economy and quality of life.

The government have launched a vision for 2020, to take Gambian people out from poverty to achieve a better standard of life for all.
The Gambian economy is mostly based on Agriculture, tourism, arts and cultural activities. Most visitors to Gambia come from the UK and Europe. Recent evidence suggests that 8% of Gambian tourists are resident in Wales. Also there are many Gambians who now live, work and are married raising families and forging relationships with the people of Wales.
There are already some links between the Gambia and schools and organisations of Wales. GACEW intends to improve upon the past efforts and forge new links and partnerships.
While GACEW continues to provide numerous workshops, activities, performances and Gambian experiences for the people of Wales, we are now motivated and directing our efforts to return the skills, knowledge and experience of Wales to The Gambia.

Until we hear from you soon, we remain with the wish and willingness to work with your organization in supporting communities and making a difference in people’s lives.
